The largest bank in Papua New Guinea launches UnionPay QuickPass service

UnionPay International announced today that it has partnered with South Pacific Bank (BSP), the largest bank in Papua New Guinea (PNG), to enable all the POS terminals of the BSP to accept UnionPay QuickPass, UnionPay’s contactless payment service. Chairman of China UnionPay Mr. Ge Huayong, and CEO of BSP Mr. Robin Fleming, attended the business launch ceremony. The Honorable Rimbink Pato, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of PNG, Mr. Liu Linlin, Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in PNG were also present to witness. In addition, UnionPay International has also entered into acceptance cooperation with Kina Bank. It is expected that UnionPay will reach 100% acceptance in PNG in the first half of next year.
PNG is the first South Pacific island country that has participated in the “Belt and Road Initiative”. It is also China's largest investment partner and important energy supplier in the region. In this context, UnionPay International has continued to improve its acceptance network in PNG. So far, all the top three banks in PNG have enabled their ATM and POS terminals to accept UnionPay cards. The acceptance coverage rate of UnionPay cards has reached 90%.
Ge Huayong said, under the background of the implementation of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, UnionPay is carrying out diverse business collaboration with countries and regions along the Belt and Road, substantially enhancing the level of payment services. On the basis of having met visiting tourists’ payment demands, UnionPay’s cooperation with BSP to launch UnionPay QuickPass service will further improve the payment experience of UnionPay cardholders visiting PNG.
Liu Linlin said, over the years, China and PNG have enjoyed friendly political relations and established a strategic partnership of “mutual respect and common development”. The economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has continued to develop. China is committed to supporting the economic and social development of PNG. We appreciate the collaboration between BSP and UnionPay, and believe that it will facilitate the payment interconnection between China and PNG.
BSP is UnionPay’s first partner in PNG. To date, BSP has enabled all of its over 10,000 POS terminals and over 300 ATMs to accept UnionPay cards. With the completion of the local chip migration, BSP are further enabling its POS terminals to accept UnionPay IC card QuickPass and UnionPay mobile QuickPass, covering various consumption scenarios most frequented by tourists. At the same time, ANZ in PNG also enabled the UnionPay QuickPass service and the other banks will enable soon.
Robin Fleming said that he is very happy to see the two sides continue to achieve new cooperation fruits. The launch of UnionPay mobile payment service will enhance our service capability to Chinese tourists, and bring more business opportunities to local businesses. We expect the two parties to carry out more cooperation in the future to build a payment bridge between the two countries.
