UnionPay mobile QuickPass service launched in Russia
2018-12-20

UnionPay International announced today that UnionPay mobile QuickPass solution, Huawei Pay, is launched in Russia. Users of Huawei and Honor mobile phones in Russia are able to bind UnionPay cards issued by Gazprombank and Rosselkhozbank to experience safe and convenient UnionPay mobile payment service. This is the first time that UnionPay and Huawei have jointly launched Huawei Pay service to the international market after the launch of the service in mainland China in 2016.

In recent years, UnionPay International has accelerated the roll out of its mobile payment services outside mainland China. On the one hand, it has continued to expand the acceptance scope of the mobile application of “UnionPay”, on the other, it has continued to promote the localization of its mobile payment services, providing products such as UnionPay QR code payment and UnionPay mobile QuickPass to more customers outside mainland China. So far, UnionPay mobile payment service is available in 43 countries and regions outside the Chinese Mainland. UnionPay mobile QuickPass is accepted at 2 million POS terminals in over 30 countries and regions outside mainland China. UnionPay cardholders in Hong Kong, Macau and South Korean can also bind locally-issued UnionPay cards to their mobile phones to make tap-and-go payments.

In January of 2018, UnionPay International and Huawei signed an agreement to roll out UnionPay mobile QuickPass solution Huawei Pay to the global markets. Now, the service is initially launched in Russia. Several factors contributed to this: First, UnionPay has achieved quite extensive acceptance in Russia, with acceptance coverage of over 90% and more than one million merchants accepting UnionPay mobile QuickPass. Second, more than 1.5 million UnionPay cards have been issued in Russia, and Huawei has a large number of mobile phone users in the market.

The cooperation is realized basing on the UnionPay International Mobile Payment Service (UMPS) platform. The back-end systems of Gazprombank and Rosselkhozbank are connected to the system of Huawei via the APIs of UMPS, which reduces the banks’ cost in system modification.

In the first quarter of next year, users of Huawei and Honor mobile phones in Russia will be able to download the Huawei Wallet app in the HUAWEI AppGallery. After binding the UnionPay card issued by Gazprombank and Rosselkhozbank, Russian cardholders will be able to make tap-an-go payments at POS terminals that support UnionPay contactless payment. UnionPay International and Huawei will jointly launch Huawei Pay service in Hong Kong and other markets in the future.
