Card payment organisation UnionPay International has announced that the number of SumUp merchants accepting its services has increased in the last 12 months.

According to the company, over 800,000 SumUp merchants now accept UnionPay cards.

Wei Zhihong, UnionPay International’s Market Director and Head of Europe, said: “Today’s announcement represents yet another step forward in our rapidly expanding global footprint and importantly will enable UnionPay cardholders to more easily and conveniently shop at a much greater number of SumUp’s European merchants. We believe this will be advantageous to UnionPay cardholders, whether Chinese or European, as well as to the European merchants.”

The two companies started working together in 2012, and since then have expanded their partnership.

As a result, UnionPay cardholders can now pay via EMV and contactless payment methods at merchants based throughout Europe. These include merchants in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden.

Zhihong added: “We are delighted to have expanded our relationship with SumUp, a truly unique market leader in the payments industry, which has been at the forefront of developing innovative technology that every merchant can use.”

International expansion

To date, SumUp is accepted by over two million merchants worldwide and is active in 32 countries. In addition, the fintech’s card readers pair with both Android and iOS smartphones to verify payments through the internet.

Originating in China, UnionPay is now accepted in 40 countries and regions, with the coverage rate increasing to 70% of all the bank card-accepting merchants in Europe.

Through its partnership with SumUp, UnionPay aims to enable local SMEs to be well-prepared to welcome tourists from China and other parts of the world when global tourism recovers.

Earlier this year, UnionPay released a new Content and Service Platform to develop Pay+, a digital ecosystem in order to support partners amid Covid-19.

The services aims to enable institutions to deliver instant payment for utilities, transport, lifestyle as well as entertainment.
