UnionPay International jointly issue UnionPay cards with Rosselkhozbank

On June 16 local time, UnionPay International and Rosselkhozbank (RHSB) announced on the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that they would jointly issue UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62) on a large scale. According to the two parties, 500,000 UnionPay cards will be issued in the next three years. The two parties also agreed to enable the bank’s 2,500 contactless terminals to accept UnionPay QuickPass in a year. Shi Wenchao, Chairman of China UnionPay and Dmitry Patrushev, President of Rosselkhozbank attended the card issuing ceremony.
Rosselkhozbank, the state-owned bank in Russia with the fourth largest asset, has enabled all of its 3,300 ATMs and4,000 POS terminals to accept UnionPay cards, including the POS terminals at Azbuka Vkusa, the most popular chain supermarket in Moscow. Meanwhile the bank conducts card issuing business across many cities and villages in Russia. To date, it has issued about two million bank cards of other brands.
This time, UnionPay International deepens its cooperation with Rosselkhozbank. First, the two sides realized cooperation in card issuance. The bank will issue 500,000 UnionPay cards in three years, making UnionPay cards its featured products. Second, the two sides reached cooperation agreement on acceptance at contactless terminals. The bank will enable 2,500 POS terminals to accept UnionPay QuickPass in the next year, promoting the technology upgrade of UnionPay card acceptance, improving card-using security, and satisfying the innovation trend of payment technology and the change of cardholders’ card-using habits.
Shi Wenchao announced in his speech that, currently, UnionPay has expanded its acceptance footprint to 160 countries and regions, and its service capacity is improving constantly. Thanks to the implementation of the “Belt and Road” strategy, UnionPay’s business in Russia has made remarkable progress. We have signed agreements on acquiring and card-issuing with quite a few large-scale financial institutions to accelerate the landing of these projects. UnionPay will always give full play to its advantages of global network and products, promote the local institutions to issue more UnionPay products that meet consumers’ demands, and accelerate the landing of UnionPay innovative products and services in Russia.

As the exchange and cooperation between China and Russia become increasingly close in recent years, UnionPay International made greater efforts to reach cooperation with local mainstream commercial banks, and has made breakthroughs in card acceptance and issuance. Now, over 300,000 merchants and more than 40,000 ATMs in Russia accept UnionPay cards. Ten local institutions have issued over 500,000 UnionPay cards, which have been frequently used in Russia, China and dozens of other countries and regions. UnionPay cards have become a payment choice favored by an increasing number of Russian citizens who visit China.
